Should You Take Your Child Fishing?

It is always desirable to get outdoors with your children and the little ones are no exception.  Often we stick to the tried and true walks to the store with the child in a stroller or bike rides with the little one in a bicycle safety seat.  But children who experience more activities at an early age have been shown to be more energetic and developmentally imaginative than those with a quieter early existence.  Fishing is an activity that can be fun for the whole family, particularly the children.

It is not a good idea to make the fishing experience too stressful at an early stage.  Rather, take the kids to a park where they can fish for a while then take a break and play games or have snacks, otherwise they'll be bored and that goes for the smallest members of your family as well.  It would be virtually pointless to take a child for an all day fishing trip in a large lake as they'll go stir crazy and drive you nuts in no time flat.  There is a great web resource for locating fish spot in southern ontario.  It's main focus is to indentify and describe great places to kayak fish and fly fish in southern ontario for adults but most of the parks described are perfect for children as well.  A particularly good place is described on the site as kayak fishing in the Island Lake Conservation Area near Orangeville, Ontario which has a beautiful big park for swimming, picnicing, playing sports and games, and there are canoes, kayaks and electric motor driven small aluminum boats for rent for the older kids as well.

Another option is described as fly fishing on Bronte Creek in Lowville Park, Ontario.  The park is smaller and quieter but just may be a bit more suitable for smaller kids as they can fish from the bank of the stream without quite so much commotion going on around them.

All in all, fishing with the kids can be an extremely rewarding experience for the children and adults as well if it's planned right.  Of course, appropriate safety precautions should be taken with personal flotation devices available for each child and frequent, liberal applications of sunscreen for everyone.  There's nothing like a child's enthusiasm when he or she catches the first fish.
